Lights working but not power points? <\/span>To many average Australians having no electricity at your power points seems like a strange issue that doesn\u2019t make <\/span>any logical sense. How could some of the power in your home work, but not all?

It is actually very simple, and it\u2019s even a safety feature. The thing that is causing\u00a0<\/span>this problem is literally called a \u201cSafety Switch\u201d. This clever little switch is\u00a0<\/span>designed to shut off all power to all the electrical power points in a house if any\u00a0<\/span>kind of electrical \u201csurge\u201d is detected.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAs a real estate agency we frequently get calls about this from tenants whose\u00a0<\/span>power points all have no power, but the lights are still working. They are\u00a0<\/span>confused and would like us to send an electrician to fix this. The issue here is\u00a0<\/span>that it is almost certainly a faulty appliance, and unfortunately electricians don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>work for free, and will want to be paid for their time to attend the property.<\/span><\/p>\n

So tenants, unless you would like to be paying the electrician\u2019s call out fee to tell\u00a0<\/span>you that your toaster or kettle is broken, we recommend you do the following\u00a0<\/span>steps:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Turn off every power point in the house (literally every single one)<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Go to your electricity metre box<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Flick the safety switch back on<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Assuming it now stays on, systematically go through every power point in\u00a0<\/span>the house, turning them back on, until you discover which appliance is\u00a0<\/span>causing the surge (it can even be small appliances like alarm clocks)<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Remove and replace faulty appliance<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    To older Australians you might be wondering how people don\u2019t know what a\u00a0<\/span>safety switch is. Whilst most older Australian\u2019s seem to have no issue with this,\u00a0<\/span>as they were probably an adult living in a house when safety switches were first\u00a0<\/span>introduced as mandatory, many younger Australians have lived at home or were\u00a0<\/span>children during this period, and for some reason the knowledge of what a safety\u00a0<\/span>switch is and how it works hasn\u2019t been passed down from parent to child in many\u00a0<\/span>cases. Possibly it is considered such common knowledge by some that it wasn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>deemed worth instructing teenagers in?<\/span><\/p>\n
